Is It Just Me?

May 13, 2008: Yet He Keeps Talking

Our 43rd president of the United States has been taking a beating since before he was elected - and for good reason: people judge you by how you carry yourself, how you behave, and how you speak. George W. Bush lacks in all three areas. ....more>>

  • May 6, 2008: Yet We Elected Him?
There are very few things that people in this country can agree on. One train of thought that does get heads nodding in unison is that things aren’t good and they’re getting worse every day. Seeing as this is an election year, you’d think we might see hope on the horizon, but I fear that there is little anyone can do to right the listing ship.

  • April 29, 2008: Here and Now, There and Then
“Things are different today, I hear every mother say.”
    - Mother’s Little Helper, Rolling Stones, 1966
Mick Jagger’s words ring as true today as they did forty years ago: things are much different now than they were when we were younger. Skip a generation and these changes become even more evident. The only thing that remains constant is every adult complaining about how much things have changed since they were young.

  • April 22, 2008: Fly The Friendly Skies
Airlines are always in the news for one reason or another. Recently, we’ve been witness to several airlines declaring bankruptcy, including Aloha Air and the local Skybus service out of Portsmouth who stranded thousands with their last-minute announcement.

  • April 15, 2008: Couldn’t Have Said It Better: Youth
Time is the great equalizer - it takes from us our youth and replaces it with experience. As the exuberance of young ideals become distant memories, the realism of life’s journey grants us insight and wisdom. And it’s always easier for elders to look back and remember how it was; much easier than it is for children to look ahead and understand how it really is. But try telling that to a teenager.

  • April 8, 2008: Losing It
According to the latest medical charts, a man my height and build should weigh in somewhere between 170 and 185 pounds. At one point, I tipped the scales at a knee-popping 290+, but lost about 80 pounds over a six month period through diet and exercise. I could have stood to lose another twenty or so, according to doctors, but I was happy and pretty healthy at just over 210 pounds. It was a far cry from constantly knocking things over with my butt whenever I turned around.

  • April 1, 2008: What Matters?
Living the American Dream isn’t what it used to be. There was a time when people from all over the world gave up everything they knew and found their way to the United States in search of the American Dream.

  • Ye Olde Stomping Grounds
Memories from our childhood help form the adults we become. Where we grew up has a direct impact on our lives, long after we move onto bigger and better things. I often wax sentimental about the town I still consider home, even though I haven’t lived there for, coming up on, 25 years. My family moved to Kingston when I was just three years old, and though I lived there for less than fifteen years, it has always been and will always be my hometown.

  • March 18, 2008: Mean and Evil
We live in a world of right and wrong. We learn early what is acceptable, what is not and why. We have the innate ability to empathize with our fellow humans, and this leap from our own little self-centered universe to theirs, if but briefly, allows us to understand their suffering. If it hurts them, it would hurt us, so it stands to reason that unless provoked, you wouldn’t normally inflict wrong upon others. After all, you wouldn’t want it inflicted upon you.

  • March 11, 2008: Welcome Back, George
George Carlin: comedic icon. People of all ages seem to enjoy George Carlin’s scathing viewpoint on everything from religion and politics to parenting and old age - and all subjects in between. A couple of years ago, I wrote an article on my disappointment of Carlin’s 13th HBO standup special. The man whose comically matter-of-fact outlook on life usually brought a wide smile to my face now only made me feel uneasy and even a little nauseous because there was no longer any humor in his mannerisms, only bitterness and anger. “Where’d the funny guy go?” I asked.
