Jazz Piano Trios

Carriage Towne News

---- — PORTSMOUTH - The Seacoast Jazz Society will host a lecture and listening session at the Portsmouth Public Library on Wed., May 29, at 7:00 p.m. Its subject is titled, “Jazz Piano Trios from the ‘60s to the Present.” Cary Kilner, a jazz pianist and lifelong student of jazz piano, will deliver the lecture.

“The focus,” said Mr. Kilner, “will not be on the pianist in particular, but rather on the interaction that happens among the three members of the group as they pursue together a single, creative, and satisfying musical event.” Recorded examples will include the most prominent jazz piano trios of the period, such as Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans, but also some of the newer artists such as Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez and Mulgrew Miller.

Mr. Kilner is a a chemist and chemistry educator as well as a jazz pianist. Before moving to New Hampshire, he was active on the Boston jazz scene over a 10-year period.
