PORTSMOUTH — Seacoast theatergoers will finally enjoy the work of Sarah Ruhl on March 29, when her play “Eurydice” opens at the Players’ Ring, 105 Marcy Street in Portsmouth. Performances will be March 29 – April 14: 8:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 7:00 p.m. Sundays March 31 and April 7; 2:00 p.m. on Sun., April 14.

Ruhl is a blossoming American treasure, having already received a MacArthur “Genius Grant” and two Pulitzer Prize finalist nominations. Known for her distinct, poetic style, Ruhl blends comedy, myth, and melancholy to create a theatrical brew all her own. Despite her world-wide success, her work had yet to be produced on the Seacoast.

The play to end that streak is a retelling of the Orpheus myth. The classic version of the story chronicles the world’s greatest musician’s attempt to rescue his wife, Eurydice, from the Underworld: he must lead her from Hades without looking back at her.

Ruhl focuses her plot on Eurydice. The heroine reconnects with her deceased father while she contends with the Lord of the Underworld and a chorus of bitter Stones. Meanwhile, Orpheus struggles to bring his partner back to the land of the living.

The play is a heartbreaking meditation on love, loss, and memory. It promises to be a beautiful production, full of laughter and tears.

“Eurydice” contains mild sexuality and is appropriate for most audiences.
