I'm writing to publicly state my support for Warrant Article 23 on this year's ballot. The Article seeks funding for Disability Insurance for full-time Town of Kingston employees. It's a standard part of most employee compensation packages and, for a reasonably modest cost, provides partial income replacement for workers who suffer illness or injury resulting in time off the job. Having this coverage can often mean the difference between losing it all, and remaining financially solvent in the event of extended health related work absences.
After my recent car accident it was comforting to know that I had disability insurance from my employer to partially fill any income gap should it be needed. Ironically, one of the Kingston Firefighters who assisted at the scene of my accident has since developed a serious health condition and, once his vacation and sick days are exhausted, will not have that same peace of mind. This is not right.
Disability insurance through one's employer is customary today and, frankly, it's the right thing to do for the people who work on our behalf every day. I hope you will join me in voting Yes on Article 23.
