Most and least-fit states in the U.S.

A new report released by the Centers for Disease Control highlights adult fitness levels based on participation in aerobic and muscle-building activities. Find out which states came in with the fittest and least-fit populations.

Survey results

To assess participation in aerobic physical and muscle-strengthening activities among adults in the United States, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System collected data from 497,967 respondents, according to the CDC.

Results found that the self-reported activities of 20.6 percent of respondents met both aerobic and muscle-strengthening guidelines, states the CDC.

Least healthy states

According to the survey, the least healthy states, judged by the percent of participation in aerobic and muscle-training activities, include the following:

10. Iowa - 17.2 percent

9. Arkansas - 16.7 percent

8. Kansas - 16.5 percent

7. Oklahoma - 16.2 percent

6. South Dakota 16 percent

5. Louisiana - 15.5 percent

4. Alabama - 15 percent

3. Mississippi - 14.2

2. Tennessee - 12.7 percent

1. West Virginia - 12.7 percent

Healthiest states

According to the survey, the healthiest states, judged by the percent of participation in aerobic and muscle-training activities, include the following:

10. Virginia - 22.7 percent

9. New Jersey - 23.1 percent

8. Massachusetts - 23.3 percent

7. Oregon - 23.4 percent

6. Hawaii - 23.7 percent

5. California - 23.7 percent

4. Arizona - 24.2 percent

3. Alaska - 25 percent

2. District of Colombia - 26.3 percent

1. Colorado - 27.3 percent

She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
