---- — Jillian Battye, a 7th grader from the Sanborn Regional Middle School, was recently honored  at the VFW’s Scholastic Awards Banquet held in Portsmouth, where she took first place for her entry in the New Hampshire VFW’s Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.  Jillian received a prize of $300 for her essay on “What I would tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

The Patriot’s Pen Program is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and is a nationwide youth essay competition that gives middle school students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. Jillian became eligible for the state contest after taking first place in the District 7 VFW’s competition.

The Patriot's Pen program is open to all students in grades 6-8, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories.
