Students on the Rise

Christian Petry, a student from Plaistow, was recently honored as one of the brightest young students in the nation at a statewide awards ceremony for academically advanced children sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The Center honored Christian, a participant in the CTY Talent Search, for his exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to academically talented second-through-eighth-grade students. Christian, a student at Pollard Elementary School, was one of more than 40,000 students from over 120 countries who participated in the CTY Talent Search. Because of the difficulty of the tests, only 25 to 30 percent of students who participated earned an invitation to a CTY Awards Ceremony where they are individually honored for their academic performance and potential.

Maura Smith of Atkinson has been named to the Honor Roll for the third quarter at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, MA.

Thirty-three Northern Essex Community College students were inducted into the college’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, an international honor society for two-year college students. Local students honored include: Amanda Van Guilder of Hampstead; Brandon Fitton of Kingston; and Lindsay Elias of Sandown.

Northeastern University is pleased to recognize those students who distinguish themselves academically during the course of the school year. Exeter resident Kevin McLarnon, a Northeastern University student majoring in Chemical Engineering, was recently named to the University’s Dean’s List for the spring semester, which ended in April 2013. In addition to achieving distinction through the dean’s list, Kevin is a member of the University Honors Program, which offers high caliber students the chance to further hone their studies and interests, live in special interest on-campus housing, and participate in one or two honors courses each term.

Rebekah Barr of East Kingston was named to the Rhodes College Honor Roll for the 2013 spring semester. Barr is a graduate of Brewster Academy.

  • Scouts Learn to Make Ice Cream

Sandown Cub Scout Troop #268 recently visited Beyond Vanilla I Scream Parlor in Hampstead to learn how to make ice cream. Not only were the owners enthusiastic about the visit, they put on quite a show with an ice cream sundae building contest (complete with blindfolds), and then treated the boys to ice cream following the festivities. Beyond Vanilla is a locally owned establishment and the owners are very community oriented. The boys had a blast and want to thank Beyond Vanilla for their generosity.
