---- — EXETER — Four outstanding students were recognized for their community service, leadership in fields ranging from music to sports, patriotism and academic achievements at the Exeter Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution’s (DAR) April 7 monthly meeting at Langdon Place. Family members, including one student’s brother on leave from the US Marine Corps, and school officials attended as the students’ guests.
Lindsey Fitzgerald, an eighth grader at the Cooperative Middle School in Exeter, took the top award in the 2014 Exeter Chapter DAR American History Essay Contest. Her essay was one of 86 entries. In addition, Lindsey’s essay was the winning 8th grade entry from the 20 statewide chapters. In her essay, she imagined what it would be like to be a child during the American Revolution. She wrote from the perspective of an older sister in a family with an ailing mother and a father who was serving and would give his life in the effort to win America’s freedom.
Anastasia George, of Newmarket Junior/Senior High School, Kelly Seaman, of Epping High School, and Kimberley Szarmach, of Exeter High School, are the Exeter Chapter DAR Good Citizens for 2014. The DAR Good Citizen Program is nationwide, and recognizes and rewards high school seniors who exhibit qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities.
Anastasia George participated in the NH State DAR Scholarship Competition and was awarded the second place scholarship.
Chapter Regent Susan O’Leary, Chapter Chair of the DAR Good Citizens Committee Bea Dalton, and NH State Vice Regent and Chair of the NH State DAR Good Citizens Committee Wendy Stanley Jones commended the students, and noted that they will be successful and make a difference in the lives of others.
The Exeter Chapter DAR will hold its next meeting Mon., May 5, at 1:30 p.m., at Langdon Place. The speaker will be Bill Zarakotas of Liberty House for homeless veterans in Manchester and guests are welcome.
