Rockingham Quiz Bowl Winners

— For the third consecutive year, the Rockingham County Quiz Bowl team was undefeated and won the NH 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl Contest. Team members include Michaela Kirby of Brentwood, Courtney Schrempf of Fremont, and Kelsey Escobar and Maggie Kenter of Kingston. Kenter placed fifth in Individual and Kirby was 8th place Individual. Both girls are now eligible to practice and try for a spot on the team representing NH at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup. Sarah Cote of Lawrence, MA, and junior team member Jackie Johnson of Brentwood, teamed with youth from other counties and placed in the top six. In Rockingham County, more than 1,000 4-H members and 200 adult volunteers and student interns are involved in 4-H through local clubs, afterschool programs, state, and national events.   • Confirmation Class

    Congratulations to the 33 young men and women who were confirmed recently, their sponsors, families, & teachers. The ceremony led by Auxiliary Bishop Francis J. Christian and assisted by Pastor Fr. Don Clinton. St. Joseph Parish serves the communities of Raymond, Epping, Fremont, Candia, Deerfield & the County Nursing Home.

  • COOL Kids

    The COOL Kids Club of the Atkinson Congregational Church held a successful drive to help homeless families with donations of linens, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, towels, soap, shampoo, craft and school supplies, and much more. The donations were delivered to Emmanus shelters in Haverhill, MA. Some of the COOL Kids are, left, Cole Priest, Matthew William, Skye Priest, Sydney Monahan, and Jack Abel.   • 'A Midwinter Night's Scream'

    Sanborn Regional High School students put the “shake” back in Shakespeare during two public performances held in the school auditorium, celebrating Sanborn’s Shakespeare Month. Students found that Shakespeare was written to be performed, not to be read. The young men and women dedicated themselves to a month-long intensive workshop (more than twenty students) that culminated in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Scream’, written and directed by Donna Devlin-Young.

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
